Laxatives are used to loosen stools, increase bowel movements and prevent constipation. They come in different forms and each has its own mechanism of action. They include osmotic purgatives, fecal softeners and contact purgatives. Some osmotic purgatives draw water into the stool to make it softer and easier to pass, while others increase muscle contractions along the bowel mass.
There are many causes of constipation during pregnancy, including changes in hormone levels, dietary factors and a growing baby. In early pregnancy, an increase in the progesterone hormone relaxes the muscles of the intestine and causes constipation. Another hormone, aldosterone, makes the colon absorb more liquid and electrolytes, which makes stools harder to pass. Laxatives are used to relieve constipation, a common complaint during pregnancy. However, it is important to be aware of the risks involved. Other reasons for constipation during pregnancy include a change in diet and iron supplements. If these do not help, then doctor may recommend a mild laxative such as Milk of Magnesia or Metamucil and stool softener which contains docusate. The use of Laxatives during pregnancy should not be prolonged as they can cause a number of side effects, including dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. They also increase the risk of stomach cramps. IBS is a functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder that is caused by an imbalance in how the brain and gut work together. It may be triggered by things like a change in the bowel habits, stress or a family history of IBS. People with IBS usually have abdominal pain, bloating and changes in their bowel habits. They can have both diarrhea and constipation, or they may alternate between the two. Laxatives are a common type of medication used for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They help the bowel move more easily and relieve pain and bloating. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, whereas it may be due to things like a change in how the bowel works or a change in how the nerves in the digestive tract communicate with the brain. It can also be triggered by certain foods or infections. Early life stress can also lead to IBS. Laxatives can be used to help with constipation, which is a common cause of hemorrhoids. They help make stools soft and easier to pass, which reduces the straining that can cause hemorrhoids. They can also be used as an alternative to stool softeners if there is difficulty in passing bowel movements. They can be taken as capsules, liquids or enema. In case of a haemorrhoid that is causing pain and bleeding then it may be advisable to see a doctor. They can recommend a treatment like sclerotherapy, which uses infrared light or laser beam to cut off the blood supply to the haemorrhoid and force it to shrivel up. Hemorrhoids are usually swollen and inflamed veins that extend outside or inside the anus. They can cause pain, itching, bleeding and other symptoms. They are often caused by straining during bowel movements. They can also be related to pregnancy or delivery. Symptoms are usually relieved by simple changes in lifestyle and diet. Laxatives are used to treat asthma, a common inflammatory disease that makes breathing difficult. They may be used before or after an inhaler to help the muscles around the airways relax and prevent swelling and mucus production. Asthma is a long-term condition that causes wheezing and shortness of breath, especially when exposed to certain triggers such as dust or pollen. It is usually controlled well by regular treatment with medication. However, sometimes an attack can be more severe and require hospital treatment. Along with medication, a doctor might try a different approach called bronchial thermoplasty. This treatment uses an electrode to heat the airways to help reduce their size and stop them from tightening.
